Regards d’Afrique
Back in June 2004, I brought myself into a funny story: photographing the cinema in Africa (for a quick overview, just click the picture below).
The project is called “Regards d’Afrique” (Africa’s view). It’s somehow very naive but the idea is to go meeting Africa’s cinema and its public. What means a motion picture in Africa to the audience? What about the shootings? It all interests me because I didn’t know anything either about Africa, or its cinematography. Moreover, I really wanted to move out! Behave as a faro…
I went through the Burkina, I met CNA’s team in Natitingou, got to know Salif Traoré and his crew in Ségou, I’ve discussed with Adama Roamba or Dani Kouyaté. I made some photos, too… well, that was the whole point. I even took the chance to attend the World Social Forum in Bamako!
While one can already some portraits, nothing’s really definitive, yet. It may take two more years before I understand something about Africa. After walking through the casual paths, I’ve got to dig a lil’ more, now! If everything goes well, there will be a few exhibition, plus a book.
I write very often about this (in French) on regardsdafrique.com.
