I’ve recently posted this on dgrin.com a few days ago. Some contributors (most of them Americans) did think about California suburbs!

But it’s just Tom at home, in Laneuveville (France). As I take advantage of my friends to build a series of portraits with my Hasselblad, I do bring out my D200 and a flash with a very nice ombrella, sometimes. Then, I try some little things.

Because some of you asked it, here is how I dit it:

I’ve worked with the following gear :

• Nikon D200 + zoom nikkor 17-55 mm f2.8 AFS DX ;
• Nikon SB800 flash ;
• Sekonic L308S flashmeter;
• synchro-cable.

The flash was standing 2 or 3 meters (6,5 to 10 feets) away from Tom.

Exifs data:

exposure program: Manual
ISO speed: 100
compression: AF-C
shutter speed: 1/250
aperture: f14,0
exposure bias: +0,0
metering: Moyenne pondérée centrée
light source: Auto
flash: Inactive
focal length: 17,0

At first, I meter the ambiant light, like I would have taken a casual photo, without any other light than the sun. Then, I decide to set up the flash (his guide number is 56 @ 100 iso) to 1/4, instead of 1/8 which would have been enough to balance the sun/flash ambiance. My slr is set at 1/250 so I minimise the background.

With the flashmeter, I now catch the necessary aperture. I put it near Tom’s face. It triggers the flash then indicates: f14, which I use on the SLR.
